WHAT ARE

Male hormones?

The main male hormone measured in blood is testosterone. This male hormone effects multiple functions in the body. For example, testosterone supports body composition and maintains haemoglobin levels to carry oxygen round the body. Conversely suboptimal levels of testosterone will result in reduced libido and fatigue.

WHAT TO TEST?
Total testosterone is the most common biomarker measured and includes both bound and free testosterone within the body. The majority of testosterone is bound, predominately to the transport protein sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). So it is possible to calculate free testosterone knowing total testosterone and SHBG levels.

However, also measuring the hormones that control testosterone production is extremely important. The main control hormone is luteinising horomone (LH) which is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. The pituitary gland also produces the hormone prolactin which can reduce the production of LH and hence testosterone if it becomes too high.

Measuring testosterone in isolation therefore does have some limitations. Whilst measuring control hormones such as luteinising hormones and other transports proteins will provide a fuller picture.

WHEN YOU GET YOUR RESULTS
If your testosterone levels are lower than expected for your age, you will receive advice from an endocrinology specialist indicating the possible cause in the context of the other hormones measured. Providing as much information as possible about exercise levels and diet is very helpful to provide an informed response. If there are no obvious medical causes for lower testosterone than expected, it could be that this is due to a high training load with suboptimal fuelling. Is this is the case there are some lifestyle behaviours you can implement to improve levels.

Testosterone

Over time

As you age, your testosterone levels in particular will drop. In fact, by your forties, your testosterone levels could be half what they were at twenty. Overtraining in sport can also result in low testosterone.

Regardless of your age, you can benefit from testing and tracking your male hormones. This will identify where you fall on the normal range and track any significant changes.
