Why are nutrients

Important?

From healthy blood and strong bones to your immune system, hormone health and even your mood, so much of your health is dependent on the nutrients you take in through your diet. Nutrients power all the essential processes in your body, so if you’re deficient in one or more or have excess in others, it can have a big effect on your wellbeing.

A balanced diet with a wide variety of food including meat, fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables is often recommended for ensuring your body gets all the nutrients it needs

Are you eating a

Plant based Diet?

While it’s certainly possible to get all the nutrients you need through a vegetarian or vegan diet, it is difficult and requires research and attention to detail, and it’s often a good idea to include some supplements.

This is because certain nutrients are hard to get, or get in sufficient quantities, through vegetarian and vegan diets – for example, Vitamins D, B12 and dietary iron. They are present in foods such as tempeh and leafy greens, but in very low concentrations.

IBS, Allergies And Other

Restricted Diets

If you’ve had to cut out certain food groups for other reasons, for example because of IBS or allergies, then you may also be concerned about whether you’re getting all the various nutrients you need.

Deficits in certain nutrients can cause health issues which could exacerbate existing conditions, and generally leave you run down and lacking energy which, if you’re already feeling the effects of your illness, can have a big impact on your wellbeing.

How do I know if I am getting

The right nutrition?

Signs and symptoms that you might be lacking in certain nutrients include low mood, feeling rundown or lots of low-level illnesses such as coughs and colds which can indicate your immune system is depressed. But it’s hard to identify exactly which nutrient levels are low enough to cause these based on symptoms alone, and there are other deficiencies such as calcium where the effects don’t show up for months or years.

The only way to check your body is really getting what it needs is to measure key nutrient biomarkers, which is easy using a home finger prick blood test – such as Forth’s Nutricheck test.

Monitor Your Nutrient Levels

A blood test such as the Nutricheck test is the best way to gain insight into your nutrient levels. It will tell you whether your levels are within the recommended range, whether they are too low and how you compare to others of your same age and gender. We’ll also help you understand what each biomarker means, what impact they have on your health and what action you can take to improve.

Track When Things Change

A snapshot is good, but if you want to see whether or not the changes you are making are having an impact, then repeating the test after you have made changes will let you know how your nutrient levels are moving over time. It can also help you identify any drops or deficits before they start to become a problem. Every individual is unique and the body can respond differently to changes in health, diet and lifestyle. By tracking changes in your markers you can determine your own individual nutrient baseline, making the results more personalised and giving you a more detailed insight into the needs of your body.
